The republic of Ireland is situated on the island of Ireland. The only other country there is a part of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland. This island can be found in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Republic has exactly 70,280 km² of land, which is more than 83% of the whole island.
The highest point of Ireland is Carrauntoohil, at 1,038 m. The whole island has no points lower that the sea.
Natural resources in the Republic of Ireland include zinc, lead, natural gas, barite, cooper, gypsum, limestone, dolomite, peat and silver.
The biggest environmental problem of Ireland is the water pollution. Especially the lakes, which suffer pollution from agricultural run-off.
The main river in Ireland is the River Shannon. Other major rivers include the River Liffey, River Lee, River Blackwater, River Nore, River Suir, River Barrow, River Erne, and River Boyne (which is very famous for the monuments in its valley).
The climate here is tempered.
